The reports are out for unemployment rates in the U.S. and the news is grim.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

Even those in the workforce are looking\u00a0over their shoulder. No job seems to be safe anymore.<\/span><\/div>\n

Before we explore all that, though, you need to understand how serious this problem is and it doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re young or old even retired.<\/span><\/div>\n

The Unemployment Rate is\u00a0Much Higher than Reported<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the July, 2012 unemployment rate jumped to 8.3%<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
That\u2019s bad. It means 12.9 million people are without work.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
And since it is easy to read such statistics without much thought, let\u2019s emphasize it a bit.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
In the United States alone, 12,922,618 people are \u201cnewly\u201d unemployed. These are moms and dads who worry about feeding their children, keeping their homes, and clothing themselves.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
It\u2019s the equivalent of the entire population of Switzerland and New Zealand \u2013 COMBINED.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
But it\u2019s far worse than that, really.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
A more accurate unemployment figure for the United States is 15.1%.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
And we\u2019re not pulling that data from some anti-government site either. No, it\u2019s a figure that comes directly from the U.S. government itself.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
You see, most Americans don\u2019t realize it, but the government actually tracks 6 different unemployment figures (labeled as U1 thru U6).\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
Since incumbent administrations (of either party) don\u2019t want bad unemployment numbers pinned to them, they only publish a lower figure as the \u201cofficial\u201d unemployment rate. Currently, the U3 is the published, \u201cheadline\u201d rate. That\u2019s what\u2019s at 8.3%.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
The higher fifteen percent number we mentioned above is the U6 rate, which includes those who have given up looking for jobs in the \u201cshort-term.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
That means there are far more jobless people in the United States than you might think. 23.5 million, to be precise. That\u2019s more than the entire population of Australia!<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n

But Wait, There\u2019s More!<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
Up until 1994, the government also tracked another figure. It included long-term \u201cdiscouraged workers\u201d (as they are officially called).\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
These were people who had given up looking for a job longer-term, or who were forced to work part-time in a low-paying job because they couldn\u2019t find anything else.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
The government didn\u2019t like these people mucking up its numbers. They didn\u2019t paint a rosy picture. So these folks were conveniently dropped from any official statistic of the U.S. government.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn\u2019t even track these people at all anymore. The government says they don\u2019t count. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
But John Williams, an economist who runs\u00a0ShadowStats.com<\/a>, thinks they do count. So he continues to compile this\u00a0\"chartinformation. He calls it the SGS Alternate. The latest chart with data since 1994 is to the right.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
Using the same analysis model the government used to use, he calculates the true number of people currently out of work at 23.6%.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
That\u2019s a whopping 36.7 million Americans. That\u2019s more than the entire population of Canada!<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
Still not convinced?\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
CNN wasn\u2019t so sure either, so they did their own investigation earlier this year. Their report in May 2012 found that\u00a0ShadowStats.com<\/a>\u00a0— and the government — may have it ALL wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
In fact, after doing their research they reported there are…<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n

86 Million \u201cInvisible\u201d Unemployed<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
Here\u2019s how CNN came up with that number:\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
A person is counted as part of the labor force if they have a job\u00a0or have looked for one in the last four weeks<\/em><\/strong>. This year, only 63.6% of Americans over the age of 16 fell into that category, according to the Labor Department.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
That means the remainder are not working or not looking. That number now stands at 86 Million people.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
That includes people who are retired, in school or staying home to raise kids. These are people who truly aren\u2019t looking for work.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
But when CNN filtered those people out, they still came up with between 36-58 million people in the U.S. who are involuntarily jobless … or who are working part time because they can\u2019t find anything better.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
This is a staggering number. It means these people are either draining their savings and retirement funds to survive, or relying on government assistance to get by.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
It\u2019s a huge reason the economy isn\u2019t recovering.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
The only way our economy will improve is to get these people back to work.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
We\u2019re not politicians, so we\u2019ll stay out of that debate. But …<\/span><\/div>\n

Another part of the key is to start generating passive income. That means income coming in even while you are not actively trading hours for dollars.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

A rental property would be a perfect example. The rent comes in month after month. It\u2019s not dependent on how much time you put into it.<\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n
Dividends would be another example. The income flows in each month or each quarter like clockwork.<\/span><\/div>\n

Now those are just two examples. Unfortunately both of them generally require large initial investments (in a property or in company stock).<\/span><\/div>\n
